Creatively he is always open, he is a lot of fun to work with.” When I shot the first album he just showed up with Paul, It think they cabbed it to the studio. “He is one of the most important music artists of the century,” Hastings said. His intuition was right, The Slim Shady LP put Eminem on the map, turning him into one of hip-hop’s heavy hitters and eventually going multi-platinum.ĭanny Hastings, who shot The Slim Shady special edition cover talks about what it’s been like working with the hip-hop icon all these years.

“Not the full scope though, but coming from a skateboarding, punk and metal background, I knew the vibe and attitude of the music was something that wasn’t really done in rap at the time and there would be a lot of kids who he would be a voice for.” For every Nas living up to his advance buzz, there’s a Canibus done in by. When asked if he knew how big the album and Em’s career would be, Skam2 answered: Hyped hip-hop phenoms are like new cars: They depreciate in value as soon as they drive off the lot. Link in bio.Ī post shared by Marshall Mathers on at 9:52am PDT doesn't offer much on its own, but is a really nice ending to the album.“I even got that underground you did with Skam” – relinked with for #SSLP20 – read about the early days and his work on the Slim Shady LP on the site. This song takes up 11 minutes, but its all amazing! Lizard (the song) ends off with the last part: 'Big Top'. Getting more chaotic with each second, it's really exciting. The instrumentation here is truly amazing.
After the singing, we are given the most badass part of the album. He is credited with popularizing hip hop in middle America and is critically acclaimed as one of the greatest rappers of all time. This, coupled with light taps on the snare drums fill the entire track, slowly building up to 'The Battle of Glass Tears', my favourite part of the song, - if not the entire album. Marshall Bruce Mathers III (born October 17, 1972), known professionally as Eminem ( formerly stylized as EMINM ), is an American rapper, songwriter, and record producer.
Next we move into 'Bolero', which starts off calm with spiraling pianos and lots of beautiful string instruments. This song's chorus genuinely makes me happy, and its probably my 2nd favourite section of the song. The song is split into 4 sections, with the first one being 'Prince Rupert Awakes'. Weighing in at 23 minutes, it takes up the entire Side B of the album. The last song of this album, Lizard, is quite the opus. Just a wonderful, wonderful song, this is the kinda shit i want to fall asleep to. Once again, the flute on the album is soo calming and soothing. This song gives me heavy "Cascade and Cadence" vibes, except its more sad. Still, probably the weakest song of the album. While the vocals are easily the weirdest part of the album, the instrumental is also very solid. Strangely enough, the plain weirdness of the vocals is kind of amusing to me. The vocals make you go "what the fuck?", but on later listens, they still make you go "what the fuck?". The song is very detailed and features many catchy and memorable melodies. It kinda sounds like some music from a suspicious underground kids show from the 90s that you see aired at 4 am, and I really like it. Probably the most playful song on the album. Complex drum patterns filled with alot of ghost notes, everchanging acoustic guitar melodies and interesting vocals fill the soundscapes. Not soon after is it disrupted by a loud tuba sounding instrument, which lead to the more jazz influenced bits of the song. It's still playful and weird, but it sounds like it was all intended.Ĭirkus starts off with nice, calming mellotron and vocals. I was definitely weirded out by the production on my first listens, but it has really grown on me. The weird jazzy songs forms an interesting listening experience, that you can't raelly find anywhere else. As usual, King Crimson continues with their very experimental compositions, this time with heavy jazz influences. Lizards reception was a bit over the place, even being hated by the lead of the band, Robert Fripp.Įven with all the internal struggles of the band, I find the album very enjoyable. After recording and releasing 'Lizard' they both left due to unpleasent experiences with the band. King Crimson's third studio album the group find themselves again playing with new people, with guitarist Gordon Haskell and drummer Andy McCulloch both being newcomers to the band.
